Products: L-Mesitran Soft
Case study performed by: Dr. Johan Marais
A sub-adult White Rhinoceros was treated for a gunshot wound on the left anterior lower limb. This severe injury was complicated due to the difficulty in managing such large animals in their natural habitat, making efficient and minimal treatment crucial to avoid stress and risk of further complications.
Method: The wound was initially cleaned with water and chlorhexidine soap. L-Mesitran Soft was then applied thickly to ensure long-lasting presence and activity. The treatment area was subsequently aligned and secured in a cast to stabilize the wound and promote healing.
Results: The treatment with L-Mesitran Soft led to significant improvement within days. The aggressive infection that had led to cracking of the cast subsided, and the wound displayed remarkable healing, resolving without the need for antibiotics after tests showed sensitivity to MGH components against specific bacteria.

Discussion: The case highlights the challenges of treating wildlife injuries, exacerbated by risks like poaching and natural mortality. The use of medical-grade honey (MGH) has shown substantial benefits in wound healing, promoting autolytic debridement, reducing oxidative and inflammatory stress, and enhancing tissue reepithelialisation.
Conclusion: This case underscores the efficacy of L-Mesitran Soft in treating serious wildlife injuries, offering a viable, non-invasive treatment option that minimizes stress and maximizes recovery. It exemplifies the broader application potential of MGH in veterinary medicine, especially for large animals like rhinos.
In our study, we utilized L-Mesitran Soft. Now, we are excited to introduce a new addition to our portfolio tailored for veterinary use: L-Mesitran VET Soft. This product features the same beneficial ingredients and components as our L-Mesitran Soft, but in packaging designed specifically for our veterinary colleagues. L-Mesitran VET Soft is an antibacterial gel containing 40% MGH, supplemented with vitamins C and E, making it ideal for both superficial and deep wounds.
