Case study performed by: F. Kegels, RN, Belgium
A 60-year-old woman with a 5-week-old leg wound (25×10 mm) developed yellow slough and inflammation. The wound had previously been treated with hyaluronic acid and low-adherent dressings, but healing had stagnated. She has high blood pressure and smokes 20-25 cigarettes daily.
Method:The wound was cleaned daily with saline and treated with L-Mesitran Tulle, covered with an absorbent cellulose dressing (Zetuvit) to manage exudate. Over four weeks, the wound showed significant improvement, with the slough nearly gone and a healthy wound bed visible.
Results:Within six weeks, the wound healed completely with minimal scarring. The patient was satisfied with the treatment, which showed rapid anti-inflammatory effects and decreased exudate levels.
Discussion:Smoking and hypertension are known to delay wound healing, but the anti-inflammatory properties of honey helped reduce the inflammatory reaction quickly. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of honey-based dressings in overcoming such complications and promoting faster wound healing.
Conclusion:L-Mesitran Tulle proved highly effective in treating a chronic leg wound that had previously stagnated. Its rapid anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties offer a promising solution for patients with delayed healing due to factors like smoking and hypertension.
