Case study performed by: Dagmar Unterreiter, DGKP (WMP), Lissi Med, Medical and Wound Center Wiener Neustadt, Vienna, Austria.

A 25-year-old male had a tattoo done abroad that became severely infected due to inappropriate use of a strong surface disinfectant. The infection was so severe that systemic antibiotics were required to prevent sepsis.

Method: The wound was cleaned with Aqvitox D Wound Rinse. L-Mesitran Soft was applied as a primary dressing, covered with Hydrofiber and superabsorbent dressings, and fixated with plain gauze.

Results: The infected area, initially red and inflamed, showed rapid improvement with L-Mesitran Soft. Within three weeks, the skin completely healed without significant scarring, impressing the wound care specialist.

Discussion: Tattooing carries a risk of infection, particularly when hygiene standards are compromised. Medical-grade honey (MGH) has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that make it ideal for treating inflamed and infected wounds. MGH not only treats but can also prevent complications in fresh tattoos by forming a physical and antimicrobial barrier.

Conclusion: MGH is highly effective in treating tattoo-related complications like infections and inflammation. It can also be used prophylactically on fresh tattoos to prevent complications and promote healing.
