Healing First and Second Degree Burns with Medical-Grade Honey

Products: L-Mesitran Ointment & Soft
Case study performed by:Dr. N. Welkovics, Unitas Hospital (Pretoria, South Africa)

A 38-year-old male sustained extensive first and second degree burns to both hands and forearms following a car accident. Initial hospital treatment with silver sulphadiazine resulted in sloughy wounds, maceration and unpleasant odour. The patient also reported significant pain. Due to the lack of progress, treatment was changed to L-Mesitran Ointment and L-Mesitran Soft.

Method: L-Mesitran Ointment was applied to slough-covered areas using polyester tulle as a contact layer. L-Mesitran Soft was used on more superficial burn areas. Dressings were changed regularly and fingers were bandaged separately to maintain anatomical positioning.

Results: Within the first few days, necrotic tissue softened and could be removed more easily. The patient reported a noticeable reduction in pain and discomfort. By day 10, epithelial tissue had formed across most affected areas, with healthy wound healing progressing rapidly. After 17 days of treatment, both arms and hands were almost completely healed with minimal scarring and no adverse reactions reported.

Discussion: Burn wounds can be difficult to manage, particularly when slough, pain and delayed healing are present. In this case, switching to L-Mesitran Ointment and L-Mesitran Soft promoted rapid debridement, reduced pain and supported the formation of healthy epithelial tissue. The patient achieved near-complete healing within 17 days, with minimal scarring and no reported adverse effects.

Conclusion: After initial treatment with L-Mesitran Ointment, nursing staff switched to L-Mesitran Soft because of the heightened sensitivity the patient endured with the L-Mesitran Ointment (due to the osmolarity of the prod-uct). The L-Mesitran Soft products quickly desloughed and debrided the wounds. The patient showed quick epithelialisation on the right arm, left arm and hand. In seventeen (17) days the patient recovered with little to no scarring. No adverse reactions were reported.
