Overcoming Cancer: A Senior Cat's Journey

Products: L-Mesitran Soft
Case study performed by: Dr. ACJM Paping (DVM), Maastricht, The Netherlands.

A 17-year-old long-haired neutered cat was diagnosed with fibrosarcoma, a type of cancer that develops from connective tissue cells, on her left front leg. This was a recurrent issue, as a similar tumour had been removed a year earlier from the same location.

Method: The treatment involved cleaning the area around the tumor and applying L-Mesitran Soft directly to the wound, which was then covered with an occlusive dressing. The dressing changes started daily and later adjusted to every other day. Additionally, skin was grafted from the cat’s flank to protect the newly formed granulation tissue.

Results: Within a week and a half, the wound showed significant improvement with firm edges and visible granulation tissue. Although the wound closed, tumor remnants persisted, leading to the decision to amputate the leg. Post-amputation, the cat recovered well and regained weight.

Discussion: Surgical removal is a common approach for fibrosarcomas, but the addition of honey-based treatments like L-Mesitran Soft can significantly enhance wound healing and prevent infection, offering a less invasive first step in managing the condition.

Conclusion: This case illustrates the potential of honey-based treatments to improve quality of life and healing outcomes in pets with cancer. L-Mesitran Soft not only supported wound healing but also provided a viable option to delay more radical treatments like amputation in a senior cat with fibrosarcoma.
