Rapid Recovery of a Tortoise with Severe Bite

Products: L-Mesitran Soft
Case study performed by: Helene Widmann DVM, Tierklinik Aspern, Vienna (www.exotenambulanz.at, helene.widmann@gmail.com), Austria

“Alexis,” a Hermann’s tortoise found with severe injuries including a severed left forelimb and multiple shell fractures, likely caused by a dog attack. The tortoise showed signs of chronic suboptimal care, affecting its overall condition.

Method: Initial treatment involved general analgesia and antimicrobials, followed by maggot removal, sharp debridement, and application of L-Mesitran Soft. The severely damaged limb was amputated, and the tortoise received daily mallow baths and weekly sharp debridements to manage shell injuries.

Results: “Alexis” showed remarkable recovery, eating independently after one week, and moving around within a month. The forelimb was replaced with a prosthetic device, and continuous application of honey-based gel supported healing of the carapace and plastron.

Discussion: This case underscores the challenges tortoises face from anthropogenic impacts and the potential severity of carapace injuries. The successful use of honey-based gel for both soft tissue and hard shell injuries presents a viable, non-restrictive treatment alternative to more traditional methods like Vacuum Assisted Closure.

Conclusion: The successful treatment of “Alexis” with honey-based gel demonstrates its effectiveness in comprehensive wound care for tortoises, offering a less invasive, highly effective recovery method that can be adapted for similar veterinary cases.
