Toe amputation due to an infected diabetic foot ulcer (DFU)

Products:  L-Mesitran Soft, Ointment, Tulle and Foam
Case study performed by: Adéla Holubová, University of South Bohemia, České Budějovice, Czech Republic

The patient presented with an infected diabetic foot ulcer on his left foot after a toe amputation. The ulcer was large, producing moderate exudate, and showing signs of infection with multiple pathogens, including Streptococcus dysgalactiae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Method: Treatment involved cleaning the ulcer and applying L-Mesitran Ointment and Tulle. Dressings were changed every 48 hours, later extending to every four days as the wound improved. The treatment continued until the ulcer fully healed over 140 days.

Results: After 14 days, infection signs such as warmth, exudate, and malodor resolved. By day 140, the ulcer had completely healed, with a significant reduction in wound size and elimination of most pathogens. The treatment led to successful healing without complications.

Discussion: Medical-grade honey (MGH) demonstrates broad-spectrum antimicrobial and healing properties, making it effective in treating chronic wounds like DFUs. The case supports MGH’s ability to reduce infection, enhance healing, and offer a cost-effective treatment alternative, particularly in diabetic patients.

Conclusion: MGH, particularly L-Mesitran Soft, is effective for treating infected chronic DFUs, regardless of bacterial resistance. It serves as a safe, potent, and cost-effective therapy that can complement or replace traditional antibiotics.
